Preparing Your Kitchen Appliances for Winter

Colder weather is a good prompt to check the kitchen equipment you use all year. Focus on safe operation, food temperature, visible leaks and the cleaning steps in each appliance’s manual. A winter checklist should not promise lower bills or encourage work on gas or electrical parts.

Oven and hob: check safely

Clean the oven and hob only when they are off and cool, using products and methods allowed by the manufacturer. Remove built-up grease, check that controls and door seals look intact, and keep cloths and packaging away from cooking surfaces. If an electric appliance has a damaged cable, sparks, a burning smell or repeated tripping, stop using it and arrange a qualified check. The government’s Fire Kills advice explains these warning signs.

A lazy yellow or orange flame on a gas appliance can be a warning sign, but it is not a reason to clear a burner or repair a gas fitting yourself. Turn the appliance off and ask a Gas Safe registered engineer to inspect it. Gas Safe Register’s safety factsheet explains the signs and what to do if you suspect a fault. If you smell gas, follow the emergency instructions from your gas supplier rather than operating electrical switches.

Fridge and freezer: protect food first

Check the door closes fully and the seal is clean and undamaged. Keep the appliance’s ventilation spaces clear according to its manual. Use a fridge thermometer rather than judging by touch: the Food Standards Agency recommends 5°C or below for a fridge. If it cannot maintain a safe temperature, deal with the food-safety issue promptly and arrange a diagnosis. Do not assume a loose paper test alone proves a seal needs immediate replacement; check the whole door and the actual temperature.

Freezer care depends on the model. A frost-free model and a manual-defrost model need different maintenance. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions before removing ice or cleaning exposed parts. Never use a sharp tool to chip away ice. If water leaks or a cooling fault persists, stop improvising repairs and seek professional advice. Our No Frost guide explains the difference between designs.

Dishwasher: routine checks

Inspect and clean the filter as your model’s manual directs, and make sure large items do not block the spray arms. Check the detergent and programme match the load. Bosch’s dishwasher-cleaning guidance shows how a removable filter and spray arms can be cleaned on appropriate models; use your own manufacturer’s instructions before taking anything apart. Do not assume a dishwasher draws hot water from the kitchen tap: connection requirements vary by model. Avoid unapproved cleaners or vinegar cycles that may conflict with the manual.

A leak, persistent poor cleaning or an error code may need a technician. If a professional diagnosis shows replacement is appropriate, compare the size, installation and energy label of current dishwashers rather than choosing from a general age rule.

Water pipes and appliance hoses

Look for visible wear, drips and kinks around accessible appliance hoses and connections without moving heavy or live equipment unsafely. If a pipe is at risk of freezing or already frozen, follow your water supplier’s advice or contact a qualified plumber. Do not force a frozen valve or use a naked flame to thaw a pipe. The same caution applies to an ice-maker water line: its position and winter exposure depend on the installation, not the season alone.

Repair or replace on the facts

A seasonal check can reveal a problem; it cannot tell you that every old appliance should be replaced. For a fault, compare a written repair quote with a suitable replacement and any warranty. If energy use matters, compare the actual labels and your expected usage. Energy Saving Trust explains how size and energy-consumption figures affect the comparison. No general winter saving or payback period applies to every household.
