How to Choose a Combi Fridge Freezer (2026 UK Guide)
This guide covers the actual decisions you need to make when buying a combi fridge freezer. We're Go Assist Appliances, backed by a UK family-owned home services group with 17 years of experience. Our engineer network has installed and repaired thousands of these units across the UK since 2009. We know which features matter in real kitchens and which ones are just box-ticking.
A combi fridge freezer puts your fridge on top and freezer below in one tall cabinet. It's the most popular layout in UK homes because it fits standard 60cm kitchen spaces and gives you both compartments at useful heights. The question isn't whether to buy one, it's which one will actually suit your household for the next decade.
The 5 Things That Actually Matter
1. Frost System: Manual Defrost, Low Frost, or No Frost
Manual defrost units need emptying and scraping every few months when ice builds up. Low Frost systems slow this down, so you might defrost once or twice a year instead of four times. No Frost systems use fans to prevent ice forming entirely.
No Frost costs more upfront, around £100 to £200 extra. It saves you the defrosting faff but uses slightly more electricity because of the fan. For most households, No Frost pays for itself in time saved within two years. If you're on a tight budget, Low Frost is a sensible middle ground.
Dual No Frost means both fridge and freezer compartments get the treatment. Total No Frost is the same thing with different branding. Either way, you never chip ice off the back wall again.
2. Split Ratio: 50/50, 60/40, or 70/30
This tells you how much space goes to fridge versus freezer. A 60/40 split gives 60% to the fridge, 40% to the freezer. A 70/30 split prioritises fridge space even more.
Most families use more fridge than freezer. If you batch cook or buy frozen in bulk, consider 50/50. If you shop fresh two or three times a week, 70/30 makes better sense. The 60/40 split is the most common because it fits average shopping habits without wasting space either way.
3. Total Capacity in Litres
A 229-litre unit suits one or two people. A 286-litre model works for three people. Families of four or more typically need 300 litres upwards. These are rules of thumb, not laws. If you cook from scratch daily, you'll want more fridge space than someone who eats out often.
Check the split between fridge and freezer litres separately. A 70/30 split at 355 litres gives you roughly 248 litres of fridge and 107 litres of freezer. That's a different tool than a 50/50 split at the same total.
4. Width: 54cm or 59.5cm
Most UK kitchens have 60cm cabinet slots. A 54cm fridge freezer leaves breathing room on each side for ventilation. A 59.5cm model uses nearly the full width, which looks neater but needs careful measuring.
Measure your space with the kitchen doors open. You need clearance for the fridge door swing too. If your kitchen's tight, the 54cm width is safer. If you have the space and want maximum capacity, 59.5cm is fine.
5. Height and Door Reversibility
Standard height is around 185cm to 190cm. Check your ceiling clearance and whether you need to move the unit upstairs. A taller fridge freezer holds more but becomes awkward in homes with low ceilings or narrow staircases.
Door reversibility lets you change which side the door hinges on. Most modern units offer this. Confirm before buying if your kitchen layout demands the door opens a specific way.
The 3 Things Marketing Will Try to Upsell You On
1. Smart Features and Wi-Fi
App-connected fridge freezers let you adjust temperature from your phone. In practice, you set the temperature once when you install it and never touch it again. The notification that your door's been open for 30 seconds is rarely worth the extra cost.
If you genuinely want smart home integration, fine. But don't pay £200 more for features you'll ignore after the first week.
2. Water and Ice Dispensers
Plumbed water and ice dispensers look impressive. They also need a water line, a drain, and regular filter changes. The ice maker takes up freezer space. Unless you use a lot of ice daily, a £10 ice tray does the same job.
American-style fridge freezers with dispensers suit larger households who value convenience over running costs. For most people, they're an expensive novelty.
3. Exotic Drawer Systems and Crisper Technology
Freshness drawers, humidity zones, and crisper compartments all sound technical. In reality, they're plastic boxes with adjustable vents. They work, but a £400 fridge's crisper performs about as well as a £600 model's "advanced fresh lock system". The lettuce can't tell the difference.
Look for at least one or two drawers to separate veg from meat. Beyond that, you're paying for marketing.
How to Pick the Right Size for Your Household
One person living alone can manage with 150 to 200 litres total. Two people need 200 to 250 litres. A family of three wants 250 to 300 litres. Four or more people should look at 300 litres upwards.
Add 50 litres if you batch cook, host often, or shop weekly instead of every few days. Subtract 50 litres if you eat out regularly or have minimal freezer needs.
Measure your kitchen space before you browse capacities. There's no point wanting a 355-litre model if your cabinet slot only fits 54cm wide. Width and height limit your capacity choices, not the other way around.
Energy Rating Reality Check
The A to G energy label changed in 2021. Old A+++ ratings disappeared. Most fridge freezers now sit between C and F on the new scale. A modern F-rated unit is still more efficient than an old A+ model from 2015.
A D-rated fridge freezer uses roughly £60 to £70 worth of electricity per year at current UK prices. An F-rated model uses about £80 to £90. The difference is £20 annually. Over ten years, that's £200.
If the more efficient model costs £100 more, it pays back in five years. If it costs £300 more, you'll never recover the difference. Check the actual kWh figure on the label, multiply by your electricity rate, and do the sums yourself. Don't assume a better letter always saves money.
Reliability Signals to Look For
Whirlpool, Hotpoint, and Indesit dominate the UK market for good reason. Parts are available, engineers know the systems, and warranties are honoured without fuss. You can get cheaper brands, but you'll struggle to find a local repair person who stocks their parts.
A two-year manufacturer warranty is standard. Anything less is a red flag. Anything more is a bonus but rarely needed, fridges either fail in the first year or run for a decade.
Avoid models with complex electronics unless you're buying from a brand with a strong UK service network. A simple mechanical thermostat lasts longer than a digital control board, especially in budget models.
Check reviews for compressor noise. A loud fridge freezer in an open-plan kitchen or near bedrooms becomes a daily irritation. Most modern units run quietly, but some budget models still sound like a diesel engine.
